Launching the Great Harry at Portsea Venture Playground

The sinking of the Mary Rose has inspired a new area in the local playground just outside the dockyard. Trevor Sapey, Community Engagement Officer, has been working with Ken Abbott of Portsea Venture Playground, to create a giant playship modelled on the Great Harry. The top of two masts represent the sinking of the Mary Rose as shown in the Cowdry picture.

After an outreach session, the children visited the Museum and Ship Hall, then returned to create their own rigging for the playship. They were taught this traditional skill by volunteer, Laurie Arnell, formerly Master Rigger in the dockyard. This is part of an on-going programme to inspire children to learn through play. The ship was officially opened by John Lippiett, Mary Rose Trust Chief Executive, with two players from Portsmouth Football Club in attendance.
