This is a picture of a Tudor gunner.

In his right hand he is holding a linstock. This is a stick with a head carved like a dragon's.

A "slow match" (so called because it burns very slowly) is wrapped around the linstock, with the end held between the jaws of the dragon.

This end would be lit and used to set the powder in the touch hole alight to fire the gun.

The next page shows you how to load and fire a bronze gun.
