trees were chosen for the shape of timbers that could be cut from them.
Long straight trees were cut down to make planks and beams. Trees on the edge of the wood provided the right-angled timbers for ship's "knees". (These were timbers that helped support the decks). Hedgerow oaks could be used to make curved timbers which were very useful for shipbuilding. |
