Cleft planks are more resistant to shrinking and splitting than sawn ones. This is because they are split along the grain of the wood.

This sort of plank was used on the Mary Rose for the "weatherboarding" on the forecastle and aftercastle.

It is ideal for areas that are exposed to both the sun and wind, then soaked with rain or spray.
