The biggest demand for wood was for use as fuel. Coal wasn't used in most of England yet, so firewood was used for all heating and cooking.

In a bad winter people would die from cold if firewood couldn't be found. This happened in Henry's reign in 1542.

Wood was also used in industry, particularly for making charcoal for use in iron making. The charcoal makers planted coppices to make sure they had a good supply of wood.
