The bigger trees used for ship building came from two types of wood. "High woods" were small groups of very big oak trees all of the same age. A copse was a mixture of young and old trees. The smaller trees in a copse were thinned out regularly. English oaks grow slowly and the best oaks take 80 to 120 years to grow big enough to make big ships' timbers.
