Materials and their Properties
This session combines history and science with a range of practical activities looking at materials used on the Mary Rose. Pupils consider the conservation challenges faced by scientists at the Mary Rose today.
NEW! In Sickness and in Health
How healthy were the men on the Mary Rose? Pupils learn through practical activities using replica artefacts from the Barber – Surgeon’s cabin and investigate the crew’s diet using the archaeological evidence found on board the Mary Rose. How does it compare to our knowledge of healthy eating today?
Evidence in Action: A Tudor Case Study
How do we know about history? Pupils examine a variety of sources, including paintings, documents and personal and professional replica artefacts to discover life on board the Mary Rose and why the ship sank.
NEW! Life on Board a Tudor Warship Extended Version
A PowerPoint presentation introduces pupils to the Mary Rose and her crew. Pupils are challenged to find out about the ship’s company, by comparing the lives of the rich and the poor with replica object handling and dressing up in Tudor clothes.
Tudor Navigation and Gun Drill
Pupils discover the unique collection of navigational instruments found on the Mary Rose by handling replica objects to research how sailors on board measured and recorded their course. During the Gun Drill session, pupils work as a team to load and fire our replica gun.
Mary Rose SEN Workshop
We tailor the hands-on sessions to your needs. Two popular topics are eating/drinking and clothing. Pupils compare the lives of the rich and poor in Tudor times. The format of this workshop reflects our experience with our two partner special schools.
