- Pupils with Special Needs: Resources and Information
Work on the new museum is well underway. The ship hall remains closed to the public as building continues. During Autumn 2011 and Spring 2012, the selection of real Tudor artefacts in the current museum is supplemented by real and replica artefact handling tables manned by our guides, an introductory film and big-screen ship presentation.
During the Summer Term 2012 the current museum will be much reduced and we offer a new programme of Curriculum Enrichment. A day or half day of activity sessions led by our team will allow pupils to use the Mary Rose as a context for work in Maths, Literacy, History or Science.
Learning Styles
Every effort is made to appeal to different learning styles:
VISUAL: The artefacts and replicas in the museum show everyday objects from Tudor times. Incredibly, wood, rope and textiles were preserved in the silt for 437 years. It is an ideal way in which to study contrasts between rich and poor in Tudor times. The collection includes possessions of high ranking officers as well as ordinary seamen.
KINAESTHETIC: The interactive Bonaventure Gallery allows pupils to try on armour, listen to Tudor music, pull a longbow and smell Tudor smells! Please ensure pupils are in small supervised groups while doing these activities. Pupils have the opportunity to handle real and replica items from the Mary Rose at our handling tables.
AUDITORY: Everyone working in the museum enjoys answering pupils’ questions and helping with worksheets. Please encourage pupils to ask questions. There are also films and recorded commentaries around the museum.
WORKSHEETS
We offer worksheets to download which you may customize or simply bring plain paper for sketching. Please photocopy the appropriate number of worksheets before your visit as we cannot provide them on the day. NB Worksheets will not be in use during the Summer Term 2012 when the museum is much reduced
MARY ROSE WORKSHOPS
A wide variety of workshops are available to enhance your visit. We provide activities you could not do in school with a wide range of replica artefacts for handling, dressing up clothes and hands-on activities. Sessions for history, science, literacy and maths are available. More details, including learning objectives, can be found on the workshops webpages.
SHOP
The Museum Shop has plenty of pocket money items for sale and the staff are happy to help young customers with small amounts to spend. This is a useful experience in practical maths. Please help the shop staff by taking pupils in the shop in small supervised groups.
Goody bags can also be supplied if there is not time to visit the shop. Prices start at £1 per pupil. Bags can contain a variety of pocket money items e.g. pencil, rubber, badges, Tudor coins, postcards. Please contact the shop on 023 9283 9938 for more information.Back to top
