Life of a Learning Intern at the Mary Rose Museum

Emily Harrison, Education Intern 2016Hello Emily here, the intern with Mary Rose Learning Department. My placement is supported by the University of Winchester from where I have just graduated with a degree in Archaeology.  I have now been with the Mary Rose Museum for 8 weeks out of my 7 month internship- it seems to be going to very fast!

Although I have been working mainly with the Learning Department, I have been given the opportunity to see how the Mary Rose Museum is run.  This was a fantastic opportunity and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.  In my first week I worked with Front of House staff and volunteers and saw what it meant to be Front of House. This demanding role included welcoming visitors into the museum, checking tickets, scanning tickets in and promoting our guide books.

Also in my first week I was given the opportunity to work in the museum in the galleries. I shadowed a staff member in the museum for the day and worked on all three decks.  I really appreciated having this experience, as not only did it help me to understand how the Mary Rose Museum works for visitors but it also helped me to work out how to get around the museum. I think I’ve got used to it now but sometimes I still get lost!

My role in the Learning Department these past 8 weeks has been to support Mary, Diane and our volunteers in the delivery of workshops for primary and secondary schools. I have now progressed to delivering Henry’s Heroes for primary schools on my own! At the other end of the age range I contributed to an A-level experience day.

Life is really busy in the Learning Department; every group is different and no two days are the same. I love the variety and look forward to seeing what the next 8 weeks bring … watch this space!
