The
Mary Rose Ashore - Page 2 of 6
A new spray system was constructed, the ship was constantly sprayed with chilled (5 degrees centigrade or less), recycled, fresh water. This was not only to prevent the wood drying out, but also to inhibit fungi and bacteria from growing on the timbers.
A viewing bridge was built in the shiphall to allow the public to view the ship for the first time for over 400 years. In 1985 the ship was turned upright and a new system of titanium supports installed to support the internal structure. Once the ship was upright, a new series of viewing galleries was constructed.
While all this was going on a lot of archaeological work was being carried out in the ship herself. The first priority was to clean as much of the remaining sediment out of the ship as possible.
