Mary Rose longbow

The Longbow

One hundred and thirty seven whole bows were found on the Mary Rose.

You would have to quite tall to use one of these bows, they had an average length of 1.98 metres.

The bows were made from a wood called yew. This wood mostly came from Italy and Spain.

Other chests full of bows were found on the upper deck below the aftercastle. We think these bows were ready to be used in battle.

The picture shows Margaret Rule cleaning the bows in one of these chests.
