The carpenter was a very important man on the Mary Rose. A modern ship is made of steel and is powered by engines, but the Mary Rose was made completely of wood. The carpenter had the same sort of job as the Chief Engineer on a modern ship has. His would have to maintain the ship, making sure the decks were waterproof, repairing broken rigging blocks, and perhaps even plugging holes made by cannon balls during battle.
