Henry VIII's time much more of England was covered in woods and forest
than today. Trees were farmed like any other crop, they were either coppiced or replanted when they were chopped down. Woods usually had a bank with a fence or hedge on top of it and a ditch around them. This was to keep out animals that might damage the trees, and to mark the edge of the property. |
