A snippet of interesting trivia relating to the Mary Rose, and Tudor life in general. Updated most Tuesdays.
We know the crew of the Mary Rose would pass the time by playing games, but do we also have evidence of them being artistic?
In one of the Carpenter’s chests, we discovered three pieces of what appeared to be wood, cut into rectangles. further analysis revealed it to be sections of fungus, specifically Ganoderma applanatum, also known as Artist’s Bracket, because the white underside turns dark when scratched, allowing pictures to be drawn.
No evidence of any drawings were identified, so it may be that the fungus was yet to be used, or indeed may simply have been kindling.
